Cap Tafelney

Cap Tafelney, surrounded by hills and sheltering a small community of picturesque fishing huts (some of which sell a frugal selection of sea-damp provisions), offers one of the coastline’s longest undisturbed beaches for anyone willing to get away from the tiny tarmac access point on its northern end.

Food and Drink

1 Pâtisserie Driss

23 Rue Hajjali; tel: 0524-47 57 93; 8am–10pm; €

The best spot for coffee and croissants in town; also does tasty light meals later in the day.

2 Fish stalls

Between Place Moulay Hassan and the Harbour; €€

This enclave of little open-air fish restaurants decked out in blue-and-white awnings is an Essaouira institution and a great place for lunch or dinner. Your choice of fish, from sardines to sea bass and lobster, is weighed and grilled while you pull up a chair at a communal table. Salad and a soft drink or water are normally included in the price. A word of warning, however: keep an eye on the scales when your fish is weighed and be prepared to query inflated prices; tourists are routinely ripped off.

3 La Table by Madada

7 Rue Youssef El Fassi; tel: 0524-47 21 06; www.latablemadada.com; Wed–Mon 7–10.30pm; €€€

A lively restaurant in an old carob warehouse, featuring stone arches and oversized pendant lights. Serves seasonal produce with a focus on fresh fish. Very busy at weekends.
